WITH Hallowe'en approaching, police in Kent are asking children to take extra care when celebrating the spooky festival. Each year, operators receive dozens of calls from concerned residents. Many are from the elderly or those living alone, concerned about trick or treaters knocking on their door.

Thanet Police Neighbourhood Watch co-ordinator Terry McCormick said: “We don’t want to spoil anyone’s fun but it’s worth bearing in mind that old people and those who live alone may feel intimidated at the prospect of opening their door to a large group of people.”

Other calls are from people concerned for the safety of young children out after dark.

PC McCormick said: ”I would also suggest parents should ensure their children are accompanied by an adult when out trick or treating.

“It’s odd that Hallowe'en seems to be the one time of year when we let our children knock on the doors of strangers.”
