Three fire engines raced to an early morning blaze in a four-storey block of flats.
Crews were called to Grange Road, Ramsgate, at 4.15am where they fought through heavy smoke to discover a fire in the basement.
Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a fan to clear the smoke and the fumes before putting out the flames.
The emergency was over by 5am and the cause of the fire is not thought to be suspicious.
