It was quite the weekend for St Lawrence College’s hockey teams with both the under 16s girls and the under 18s boys team competing at the National Indoor Hockey finals.
The u16 girls team had a tough start to the tournament, narrowly losing their first two games, but they bounced back with a win then a draw.
This saw them only just miss out on a semi-final place, but the team are now ranked in the top six teams in the country.
The school’s head of hockey, Huw Stevens, said: “This girls did the school proud and the experience they have gained will serve them well for another attempt next year.”
The u18 boys team went into their tournament full of confidence after winning the south regional round a month ago.
They started the tournament well with a good 2-1 win over Oakham which was followed by a 4-1 win over Altrincham grammar school.
Next up was a strong Millfield side who provided a stern test which ended in a 2-2 draw.
This meant that in the final game versus Bedford a draw or a win would put the boys in the semi-final.
A brilliant performance from the team led to an 8-2 victory which sealed a place in the semi-finals.
Ipswich school were the opponents for the semi-final and the St Lawrence say the “performance that followed from our boys was nothing short of outstanding.”
They secured a 5-2 win, with the nation final looming.
The final was contested against Oakham, which was a 2-2 draw at half time.
St Lawrence’s team battled on in the second half and saw in a 6-3 victory - making them the national champions 2017/18.
Mr Stevens said: “Well done to all involved in what was an historic weekend for St Lawrence College.
“We made the impossible possible.”
The school has enjoyed a proud tradition of hockey success spanning over 130 years.
Headteacher Anthony Spencer said: “St Lawrence has always been known for its excellence in sport coaching, and having top international sportsmen and women on our coaching team further strengthens this excellence.”
