The search is on for a new operator to secure the return of a town’s market three years on from shutting down.
After Covid lockdown restrictions forced its closure, the previous managers of Ramsgate Market withdrew in October 2020.
Thanet District Council (TDC) agreed for the market’s return in June last year and to seek out a new licensee while also removing restrictions for street trading and hawking in several town centre roads – High Street, Queen Street and King Street.
Now the council wants to see the market running every Friday throughout the year which it hopes will create a thriving atmosphere “at the centre of Ramsgate’s vibrant community of traders, artisans and entrepreneurs”.
The stalls will be set up in High Street and Queen Street.
The council is going to be responsible for promoting the market and attracting visitors while the new operator will come in on a two-year licence to select traders, fees and market stalls.
A spokesman said an option to renew the agreement will be in place “if a sustainable market has been established”.
Cllr Rick Everitt (Lab), leader of TDC, said: “Ramsgate Market is close to the heart of many residents and we know they are keen to see it return.
“It also helps support the existing businesses in the town centre by increasing footfall.
“The council is confident that there is significant support for a new, improved offering.
“A successful market provides a real focus for any town. This is a great opportunity for an operator to make their mark on Ramsgate, and we welcome creativity and new approaches.
“I would encourage all interested parties to apply for the two-year licence.”
