New sporting facilities are now open to the public following a £25,000 revamp.

Work to refurbish the tennis courts at Birchington Bowls Club in Beach Avenue, Birchington, began on September 5 and was completed on October 20.

The improvements included resurfacing the sports area and marking out lines for two tennis courts as well as other sporting activities such as basketball, netball and five-a-side football.

There will also be the chance to use the courts for walking football for the over-60s as well as non-sporting activities.

A pitch divider was also installed which, when closed, allows for two different games to be played at the same time.

A grand opening was held on October 21 which was officiated by Sir Roger Gale MP and attended by businessman Alan Bown, Kent County Council (KCC) members and representatives and a Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) representative along with parish councillors, youth groups and residents.

On hand to answer questions about the plans for tennis activities and coaching was Nicola

Mileham, a level three LTA coach. It is now hoped a strong tennis following will develop and become a self-governed organisation.

There was also a demonstration by a ladies’ netball team.

Terry Dunn, club member and fundraiser said: “We hope that the people of Birchington grasp this opportunity to use this wonderful facility and that it will encourage the young people of this village to become active and responsible members of our community and club.”

He added: “The vision we have for this facility is that it will be enjoyed for years to come, not only by club members, but also by the village community irrespective of age/gender/ability who wish to take up a sporting activity or just have a fun time. It will also be available for other clubs, groups or organisations to use.”

Money for the refurbishment has been raised over the last three years including contributions from KCC’s capital grants scheme, local KCC councillors and a local businessman as well as a loan from the LTA.
