A Tesco worker has suffered facial injuries in a reported assault by a man said to have been carrying a knife.
The suspected shoplifter was arrested following the incident at the Extra store in Margate Road, Broadstairs at about 5.55pm, yesterday.
Officers detained a man in his 40s on suspicion of assault, theft and possessing a bladed article.
He remains in custody as inquiries continue.
A member of staff sustained facial injuries, although police say a weapon is not reported to have been used during the assault.
One customer who witnessed the incident said: "Two security staff and a worker were struggling with a big aggressive bloke.
"What shocked me the most was the number of people who walked past.
"I jumped in to help drag the bloke off a member of staff."
A police spokesman said: "We are investigating a report a suspected shoplifter assaulted a member of staff in Margate Road, Broadstairs, at about 5.55pm.
"Officers attended the scene and detained a man in his 40s on suspicion of assault, theft and possessing a bladed article.
"He remains in custody as inquiries continue."
A spokesman for Tesco said: “We are assisting police with their inquiries following an incident at our Broadstairs store on January 1.”
