Thanet has been a popular tourist destination for decades and we have taken a look at review site TripAdvisor to see what the most popular attractions, restaurants and hotels are in the area in 2016.
Top three restaurants
1 – SECRET SPICES, MARGATE
Rated number one on the website, Secret Spices in Margate is an Indian restaurant with a twist. Reviewers have left comments of like “fabulous food” to “give your tastebuds a treat”.
2 – THE CORNER HOUSE RESTAURANT, MINSTER
Coming in at number two on TripAdvisor’s best restaurant list is The Corner House in Minster. It won the Kent Restaurant of the Year award 2015, serving Kentish cuisine. Owner Matt Sworder has worked with Gordon Ramsay.
3 – YAMA'S, MARGATE
In third place is another Margate restaurant - Yama’s, which offers Thai cuisine. Located near the top of the high street and branded by reviewers a “hidden gem”, all dishes can be customised to suit your own tastes.
Top three best attractions
1 – RAMSGATE TUNNELS, RAMSGATE
Top of the list for best attractions is the Ramsgate Tunnels. With newly-constructed escape hatches and final approval from building control, visitors can travel up to 500 metres into the tunnels and discover how more than 1,000 people made the labyrinth ‘a town under the town’.
2 – VIKING BAY, BROADSTAIRS
Taking second place is Viking Bay. it is popular with residents and tourists alike. It plays host to a number of events including a New Year’s Day dip, the water gala and has been the setting for major films including the recent Dame Maggie Smith hit The Lady in the Van.
3 – ROYAL HARBOUR AND MARINA, RAMSGATE
Completing the top trio is Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour and Marina. This is the only royal harbour in the UK and it has been described by reviewers as Thanet’s jewel.
Top three best hotels
1 – SANDS HOTEL, MARGATE
Taking top spot is the Sands Hotel. The original Victorian building started life as a hotel and restaurant, then a sweet shop before becoming what it is today. The hotel also has a restaurant – Bay at Sands, set on the first floor, leading to an outdoor terrace with views of the bay.
2 – CRESCENT VICTORIA HOTEL, MARGATE
It’s a Margate one two on the top hotels list. This 14-bedroom boutique hotel, complete with 40-cover restaurant and attached courtyard, has been described by reviewers as “a little gem” and “perfection”.
3 – ROYAL ALBION HOTEL, BROADSTAIRS
Third place goes to the Royal Albion Hotel. This building has stood on the Broadstairs seafront since 1776 and it is a former residence of Charles Dickens. Views from its 21 rooms either look out over the coastline or the town.
