Earlier, Mr Britton spoke about his friendship with Mr Gale and revealed the pair had agreed not to resort to "mud slinging" during the election campaign.
He said: "I respect Roger and if he pips me to the post then I'll be pleased for him, as that's what the people want."
Laura Murphy, who was absent from the count, finished third with 8,400 votes, while the UK Independence Party's Rosamund Parker finished fourth.
