Van users are warned to ensure their vehicles are left secure overnight and with nothing of value inside after a spate of thefts in Birchington.

A number were broken into on a single night In the latest episode of thieves targeting vans to steal tools.

This followed several other recent reports of vehicles being broken into or damaged by raiders attempting entry.

In Birchington, overnight on Sunday, October 20, two Makita cordless drills and drill bits were stolen from a van in Gainsboro Road after a rear door was forced.

In Hawkhurst Close, three DeWalt drills, which had been security marked, were stolen from a van after a lock was broken open.

A Makita drill, a DeWalt drill, a Bosch laser spirit level and a transformer were stolen from a van in Epple Bay Road via a window.

In Epple Road, thieves smashed the window of a van and attempted to get to tools which were secured in a cage but escaped empty handed.

Police sergeant Amanda Cullen said: ‘We appreciate that owners of vans do not always want to take out all their tools every night after a day at work but this is the one sure way of ensuring that nothing gets stolen.

‘We would urge all drivers to remove tools, ensure nothing is left on display in the vehicle and to double check the vehicle is locked when left unattended.

‘Vehicles left overnight should be parked under a street light, wherever possible.
