Daniel (left) and Brandon proudly show their shield
A blind youngster from Westgate-on-Sea has achieved the unexpected, with a little help from one of his friends.
Daniel Gunnell, of 1st Garlinge Cub Scouts, not only camped overnight for the first time but was named Best Cub of Camp by leaders.
His mum Paula Gunnell said 10-year-old Daniel loved the experience, mucking in with the washing up duties and taking part in all the camp activities.
But she said it would not have been possible without the help of nine-year-old Brandon Johns, who acted as Daniel’s "eyes" at camp.
Paula, who lives in Cliff Field, said: "Daniel has known Brandon since Beavers and for someone so young to have been such a great support to my son is just fantastic.
"Sleeping overnight in a tent was a really big thing for Daniel and I’m so pleased that he managed it. The leaders were really chuffed as well. Daniel has come such a long way since he started in Beavers four years ago. He now gets involved with everything and is much more confident.
"I can’t thank Brandon and the two leaders, Malcolm and Teresa Johns, enough for what they’ve done for my son.
"They’re so thoughtful, even when it comes to things like a game of football. They’re now playing with a ball with a bell inside."
Daniel and Brandon will share the shield which is presented annually to the Best Cub of Camp.
