Police and council officials say they are “monitoring” a group of travellers who have set up camp in a Ramsgate park.

The group arrived at King George IV park on Wednesday afternoon with a convoy of around 10 Irish-registered caravans and other vehicles.

They entered via the Victoria Parade gate, which is accessed by a moveable bollard, before setting up in the large field to the north of the park, an area popular with dog walkers.

A mum who does not wish to be named but who lives nearby with her 10-year-old son, said: “We have kept well away - it might seem unfair but to me, turning up en masse in a public place in the middle of the day is quite an intimidating thing to do.

"There is plenty of parking space along the seafront so to choose to take so many vehicles into a park uninvited is unfair.

“Just because someone is a traveller doesn’t mean they are a threat but several of my friends feel nervous at the moment so we are not using the park until we feel safe.”

Despite calls from concerned residents, Kent Police said they had had no direct reports of any illegal activity and that they had spoken to the group about their intentions.

A spokeswoman said: “Our officers have visited the park and spoken to the group.

"Apart from asking that they refrain from letting their dogs run around unsecured, we have no cause for investigation.

"We will keep working closely with the landowner, Thanet Council, to ensure that remains the case, and that any eviction notices are adhered to.”

Thanet Council said it was taking steps to move the group on.

A spokesman said: “We are aware of the situation and are working closely with the Police and our legal team to determine the appropriate route of action.

“We will continue to monitor the situation and appreciate that the community is concerned. We have a duty to look after the safety and well-being of all involved and are in talks with all parties.”
