Drivers in Thanet who ignore mobile phone laws are to be targeted in a new road safety campaign, after one in five admitted to using Twitter, Facebook or email while at the wheel.

The shocking statistics have prompted a crackdown by the Kent and Medway Safety Camera Partnership, which will use its eight fixed speed cameras across the isle to catch those who break the rules.

High-visibility signs are to be fitted at key locations to remind drivers that mobile speed cameras can also spot drivers who are on the phone or fail to use their seat belts. Katherine Barrett, of the camera partnership, said: "The penalty for not wearing a seat belt is a £60 fine, and for using a mobile phone while driving it’s a £60 fine and three penalty points on your licence.

"However, the consequences of a crash can be much more devastating. It’s worrying that people still don’t take seriously the dangers posed by using, in any way, a phone while driving."
