A Ukip councillor was thrown out of the party for allegedly saying she had a problem with "negroes" because there was "something about their faces", it's been claimed.

Rozanne Duncan was expelled from the party last month after making what were described as "jaw-dropping" remarks to a BBC documentary maker.

But both the party and the BBC refused to reveal the nature of the comments that led to her expulsion just before Christmas.

Now The Times has revealed what it claims were the ex-councillor's shocking remarks.

Ms Duncan, 68, is said to have made the comments during filming for a television documentary about Ukip in South Thanet.

That is where party leader, Nigel Farage, is standing for election next May.

A version of what she was alleged to have said was relayed to Ukip bosses and she was expelled shortly before Christmas.

According to the account made available to The Times, Ms Duncan said that she had a “problem” with black people, whom she described as “negroes”.

She denied being racist, and said she had "many Asian shopkeeper and local business friends".

Ms Duncan, a former Conservative who represents Cliftonville East ward on Thanet district council as an independent, refused to confirm or deny that she had made the remarks attributed to her.

In a statement, a party spokesman said at the time: "Ukip is expelling Cllr Rozanne Duncan under rule 15 of its constitution for bringing the party into disrepute. She has 28 days to appeal."

The news comes after a series of unwelcome revelations about Ukip candidates, the latest involving comments made by the parliamentary candidate Kerry Smith. He was dropped this week after using the word "chinky."

Cllr Duncan was elected to Thanet council for Cliftonville East ward in 2013, after a by-election triggered by the jailing of former council leader Sandy Ezekiel.

In addition to being a councillor, she was secretary of the Thanet South Ukip constituency association.

She won the by-election in May 2013 and earlier this year unwittingly revealed that Nigel Farage was to stand for election in the Thanet South constituency.
