Shocking bodycam footage shows the moment a man hurled a knife at police officers attempting to calm him down.

The video was shown to a judge as he jailed 31-year-old Christopher Rogers for five years for his actions at a flat in Westcliffe Road, Ramsgate.

Officers had been called to the property following reports of a disturbance and encountered 31-year-old Rodgers in a hallway, armed with two knives.

Prosecutor Dominic Connolly said: “As they entered the communal area of the address, Rogers came from the hallway holding two knives.

“He was shouting at the officers who stepped back and asked Rogers to put the knives down.”

Officers then armed themselves with tasers and kicked open a door as Rogers screamed he would go for anyone coming into the flat.

The prosecutor added: “He closed the door and then a short time later opened it and threw a 10kg weight lifting dumbbell at PC Mark Bramwell. It hit him on the right arm, causing pain.

“He then opened the door and threw the knife at PC Bramwell. This just missed him, passing his right side. “

The knife was thrown so hard it shattered after hitting a wall.

After officers arrived with a shield, Rogers was arrested and told them he could not remember much of the evening on May 30.

Rogers, who has previous convictions for arson, possession of a knife in public and assaulting a PC, admitted attempting to wound the officer with intent, assault and possession of the knives.

Jailing Rogers, Judge Simon James commended the brave police officers involved.

“Viewing the recording has highlighted the risks police officers face on a daily basis," he said.

“The calm, composed and professional way they acted under extremely difficult circumstances – facing a highly volatile and violent individual - deserve commendation.”

He asked the Crown Prosecution Service to pass on his observations about the bravery of PC Mark Bramwell and his colleagues, PC Daniel Sheppard and PC Liam Johnson be passed to Kent’s Chief Constable.
