A village pub transformed into an Italian restaurant is closing after just four months, with bosses saying they needed “more support” to be “financially viable”.
The White Stag in Monkton, near Ramsgate, was revamped into The Olive Tree at the White Stag in March as the owner John Esqulant looked at ways to diversify.
The once-traditional pub became a food-focused establishment following complete renovations to give the venue a taste of the Mediterranean.
But despite initial optimism, bosses have announced it will close for good on Sunday and they have “no plans to reopen”.
In a statement, the owners said: “It is with great regret that The Olive Tree at The White Stag Lodge will be permanently closing its doors on Sunday, July 28.
“There are no plans to reopen the bar and restaurant. Unfortunately, we needed more people's support more often to make having a pub and restaurant in Monkton Village financially viable.
“As a thank you to those in the local community who have supported us please join us for a drink on Sunday from 5pm.”
Mr Esqulant previously spoke to KentOnline about the difficulties landlords face as scores of Kent pubs shut their doors amid intense financial pressure.
As drinking habits change and the cost-of-living crisis shows no sign of receding, many landlords across the county have needed to adapt.
Untold pubs, restaurants and cafes are closing their doors for the last time due to sky-high energy bills.
High borrowing costs and staff shortages were also contributing factors.
Bosses at The Olive Tree say the rear and upstairs of the property will remain a private bed and breakfast.
They say there is an opportunity to rent the ground floor as commercial space, ideal for an office, cafe, nursery, or other use.
