A project that aims to brighten up high streets in Thanet by bringing vibrant colours to empty shop fronts has proved so successful it has been expanded into Cliftonville.

The Windows of Opportunity scheme was launched in Margate last year and the eye-catching window displays that appeared throughout the town centre featured in a number of national and international newspapers.

Some of the unused shops have since been let, boosting the town's economy.

The project has now moved into Northdown Road, where hoardings have been placed in the windows of the former Munro Cobb building.

Paid for by the government's Meanwhile fund, the murals were created by local artist Dan Bass and evoke memories of the area's golden era. The colourful display also features the poem 'Margate 1940' by Sir John Betjeman, which speaks fondly of Cliftonville.

Cllr Roger Latchford, cabinet member for economic development and regeneration at Thanet council, said: "It's all about raising people's spirits, improving the look of the area and giving the impression that something positive is happening."
