Ramsgate winger Tushaun Walters targets unbeaten season in Isthmian South East

Tushaun Walters believes Ramsgate are capable of going through the Isthmian South East season undefeated.
Cray Valley lost just once en route to the title last year and winger Walters feels Rams could even trump that achievement.
They’ve reeled off five successive league wins so far.
And summer signing Walters, whose stunning free-kick earned a 1-0 FA Cup second qualifying round win over Broadbridge Heath on Saturday, is aiming high.
“I think we can go through the season unbeaten in the league,” he said.
“It’s a bit of an ask but it’s possible with the players we have and the fans behind us. It’s very possible.
“Cray Valley only lost once last year and I’m thinking we could do even better than that.
“We haven’t spoken about it as a squad but in our car school, me Roarie (Deacon), Medy (Elito) and Josh Ajayi, we’ve said it amongst ourselves.
“It really is possible to do and I think as a group we all know that.
“On paper, we’ve got the best team in the league.
“If we were to go into a game against a Conference South side, I feel like we’d give them a run for their money.
“I’m not just saying that, I believe that.
“I feel we can do something and I’m not just talking about winning the league, I think we can have another run in the FA Cup as well.
“Everything plays a part and in the league we’ve played most of the teams that will give us a challenge.
“That in itself is a confidence boost for us.
“Teams will be coming to Ramsgate thinking it’s not going to be an easy game and that’s exactly how it should be.
“It’s a challenge but we’re in a good place, we’ve just got to keep pushing, take it one game at a time and not take our foot off the gas.”
Walters is enjoying his football again after taking a break following his release by Hastings in November last year.
He’s in the perfect place to resume his career, playing for an ambitious club and a manager in Ben Smith who got the best out of him when they worked together at Herne Bay.
“I’m just getting back into it,” said Walters.
“It’s going well. After Hastings, I decided to step away for a bit.
“There were offers here and there but I wanted to take time out and find myself again. It worked out well because towards the end of the season I started to miss football again.
“I know Ben, I’ve worked under him before, I know what I’m going to get and, at this moment in time, that’s best for me.
“Ben’s a top guy. If you know him, the way he works has an effect on people and I feel it’s important as a manager to have that type of relationship with your players.”
Walters’ winner against Broadbridge Heath was his third goal in Ramsgate colours - and his best yet as he bent a 20-yard free-kick into the top corner.
The win sets up a trip to National League North side Brackley in the third qualifying round on September 28.
“I’d been practising free-kicks before the game but I’m not really the free-kick taker,” said Walters.
“I’ll stand on the ball but to actually strike it, no.
“It was just an in-the-moment thing and it panned out well, so I can’t complain, especially to get the win.”
Walters has also enjoyed the company of several former Maidstone team-mates to help him settle in at Ramsgate.
He was part of the Stones squad who won the National League South title in 2022 alongside Tom Hadler, Joe Ellul and Deacon.
“It’s amazing to be with them,” said Walters.
“At Maidstone, we all built a strong connection.
“It wasn’t one where you’re team-mates for a season, we’ve got a different type of bond and that’s important not just off the pitch but on it.
“I’m happy at the moment. This is where I wanted to be again and in my head it’s still just the start. There’s still more gears to go up over time.”
Ramsgate lost 7-6 on penalties to Sevenoaks after a 1-1 draw in the Velocity Trophy first round on Tuesday night.
They host Raynes Park Vale in the FA Trophy second qualifying round this Saturday (3pm) and entertain Thanet rivals Margate in the Kent Senior Cup first round next Tuesday (7.45pm).
