A teenager has been celebrating after he became a national junior champion.
Bailey Giles, of PEJ ABC Margate, won the under-80kg category in the England Boxing National Development Championships at Spiceball Leisure Centre, Banbury.
The 15-year-old won his semi-final against Harvey Turner from Phoenix Fire Boxing Club in Manchester on points, needing a big last round to secure victory.
In the final, he beat Boyd Chapman from Torbay, Devon, as he showed great skills in the last two rounds to win 4-1 by a split decision.
Stable-mate Michael Chipps had to settle for bronze, just missing out on a split points decision in his under-48kg semi-final against a more experienced opponent.
Troy Ledene, meanwhile, had to withdraw from the under-51kg semi-finals due to illness. He had previously won the Southern Counties title.
“We’re extremely proud of Bailey and all the lads,” said Mario Michael, one of PEJ ABC Margate’s coaches.
“He’s our second national champion alongside three Haringey Box Cup gold medallists that we’ve had since we affiliated to England Boxing in early January 2018.”
The club’s coaching staff also thanked gym owner Malwai Nijar, of PEJ Court Properties, for all his support.
