Jamie Coyle has urged Ramsgate to stop giving away silly goals - or risk damaging their promotion chances.
Rams remain unbeaten since Coyle succeeded Steve Lovell as manager but there’s been too many draws for his liking.
They were held for the fourth time in seven games on Saturday, with their trip to Lancing ending 1-1.
Jack Paxman equalised as Rams battled back from Ashley Mutongerwa’s soft opener but the visitors couldn’t force a winner and saw their lead at the top of Isthmian South East cut to two points.
“It’s great to be unbeaten but we’ve got to turn these draws into wins,” said Coyle, who could return from injury along with Ben Fitchett when Rams host East Grinstead this Saturday (3pm).
“It’s crunch time, really, and although it’s great in terms of coming back in games, it would be nice to be in front and controlling games.
“We’ve got this knack at the moment of conceding some of the softest goals I’ve ever seen.
“All season we’ve been really solid and reliable defensively but we’ve started giving ourselves a mountain to climb because we’re conceding really poor goals through individual mistakes.
“We’re having to work hard to get back into games.
“If we were more reliable as a team, not just the defenders, we’d be in a much better position than we are now because we’re constantly asking questions and creating chances.
“All the time we’re giving a leg up to the opposition, it gives them impetus and extra motivation.
“Saturday was a terrible goal to concede and it’s been the story of the last few games, where we’ve had control for large spells but we’re making some bad decisions that are costing us.
“Sometimes you get away with it and your keeper will make a save or the player misses the chance but everything’s happening at the moment in terms of decisions we make in our own box leading to goals.
“It’s something we’ve got to restrict between now and the end of the season to give ourselves a chance of finishing where we want to finish.”
Ramsgate have strengthened their squad with the signing of winger Youssouf Bamba from Sittingbourne.
Bamba only joined the Brickies from VCD at the end of October but is on the move again, making his debut at Lancing.
Coyle recommended him to former Ramsgate boss Matt Longhurst last season after coming up against him but he stayed with VCD.
“It’s not often I’ll play against someone and say to the manager we need to get him in but he was that good,” said Coyle.
“He was on around 20 goals at Christmas and we made an attempt to sign him but he signed a contract at VCD, so it was off the table.
“Every time I’ve played against him or watched him I’ve thought he’s one of the best wingers at our level.
“He’s someone who was always in my thoughts in terms of when I got back into management or coaching and, luckily, Sittingbourne were really helpful in getting the deal done.
“He’s very effective in what he does and we had an opportunity, with the support of the chairman, to bring him in and add to the quality we already have.
“It’s going to take him a little bit of time to get up to speed, because he’s been in and out of the team at Sittingbourne, but he’s going to be a really important signing.
“He adds real competition in wide areas and in the No.10 position as well and it’s not just his goals, he’s a real threat in terms of assists as well."
Coyle is ready to return following a knee injury, while fellow centre-half Fitchett has recovered from damaged ankle ligaments well ahead of schedule.
