Pitch damage caused by foxes delay Ramsgate's build-up to new season

Damage caused by foxes has forced Ramsgate to change their pre-season plans.

The damage, in an area between the penalty spot and six-yard line in the bottom goal at Southwood, caused Rams to switch Saturday’s run-out against Ashford to Homelands, while last night’s (Tuesday) scheduled game against Folkestone Invicta was called off.

Joint boss Danny Ward said: “They have been feeding off the seed which has been laid and there are four or five patches which have been dug up.

“We have got four more games before the season starts on August 13, so there is no problem.

“We want the pitch right because there will be plenty of games played on it – first team, under-21, under-18.”

Rams lost 3-0 at Ashford and Ward admitted: “We got a hiding and didn’t play well.

“I am not a fan of pre-season, and don’t like friendlies but it’s all about learning.”

Rams were without Ian Pulman (knee) and Stephen Butcher, still nursing knocks picked up in the friendly against Margate.

Ward was this week looking to fill a free-day with another pre-season run-out on Saturday - but admits he won't be too unhappy if the club has the weekend off.
