Margate can no longer win the Ryman League Premier Division title after losing at Leatherhead.
Gate, playing their second game in 48 hours after the 4-4 draw with title-chasing Hendon on Thursday night, can no longer finish above Maidstone in the table.
Their fate at Leatherhead was settled as early as the eighth minute when Vas Karagiannis scored from the penalty spot after Brett Johnson fouled the Leatherhead man in the box.
Margate could have already been ahead but Freddie Ladapo failed to convert after an early error by Leatherhead's former Dartford keeper Louis Wells.
After the break another ex-Dartford man, Adam Green, went close for the hosts while Kiernan Hughes-Mason was also denied by Gate keeper Nikki Bull.
But chances were few and far between, particularly for Margate, with Tambeson Eyong firing wide late on.
Margate: Bull, Eyong, Rents (Bennett 80mins), Riviere (Nelson 69mins), Johnson, Wassmer (Beales 73mins), L Taylor, Wills, Moss, Ladapo, James. Subs not used: Gerring, Armstrong-Ford. Attendance: 364.
