Ramsgate know they'll be top of Isthmian South East at Christmas if they beat Chichester

Ramsgate are guaranteed to be top of Isthmian South East at Christmas if they beat Chichester.

And fans could be in for a treat as Steve Lovell’s men try to make it happen, if the visitors’ previous game is anything to go by.

Lovell, whose side are two points clear of second-placed Chatham, was in the crowd for Chichester’s 4-1 defeat at Beckenham on Tuesday last week, witnessing a crazy game.

A similar approach at Southwood on Saturday (3pm) and there will be no shortage of entertainment in the final game before Christmas.

“Beckenham beat them 4-1 but it could have been 12-12,” said Rams boss Lovell.

“It was one of those games where both teams attacked each other.

“Chichester went two down early on and they stuck five up front and had a go. It was a bizarre game.

“There seemed to be nobody in midfield whatsoever.

“There was a big, green space in the middle of the park, with players at either end. It was very, very open.

“I thought Chichester looked a good side, they just gave silly goals away.

“The first two cost them and they couldn’t get back into it. We’ll have to see what happens on Saturday.

“Everybody is beating everybody in this league - you’ve got to turn up for every game.

“You have your plan to start with but there’s been a few times where we’ve gone to Plan B after 20 minutes because the opposition aren’t playing how we thought they would.

“You can be ready for a team but personnel can change from week to week and the way they set up can change.

“You have to be one step ahead and make sure you’re covered for whatever they do.”

Ramsgate were due at Beckenham last Saturday for a top-of-the-table clash but a frozen pitch saw the game postponed.

It would have been Rams’ first match since Lovell was named manager-of-the-month for November.

“You normally lose on Saturday after getting manager-of-the-month but that game was off, so my mind is clear, it doesn’t count any more,” joked Lovell.

“It’s nice to get the award. It’s a team effort, isn’t it? A lot of people do a lot of good work and it’s nice to get that recognition for the club.”
