Margate and Horsham will meet again after their FA Cup third qualifying round match ended in a draw.

Ibrahim Olutade gave hosts Gate a half-time lead from player-boss Ben Greenhalgh’s free-kick shortly before the break.

But Oga Ogunwamide secured a replay for the Hornets with an equaliser, moments after Harvey Brand saw a header cleared off the line at the other end.

Isthmian South East Gate had already beaten one Isthmian Premier side in this season’s competition, winning 4-0 at Bognor Regis last time out.

And it was clear they fancied another scalp as they got after the Hornets in a lively start at Hartsdown Park.

They showed their intent in the opening seconds with Lukas Franzen-Jones feeding the overlapping Kai Garande down the left, with his fizzing cross almost opening the door for Olutade.

A mistake in the Horsham defence did let Olutade in on goal minutes later, with Lewis Carey smartly off his line to make the block.

Horsham grew into the game with Daniel Ajakaiye getting some joy down the right but Margate, with Franzen-Jones tracking back, were disciplined in defence.

The visitors threatened to get in on goal around the quarter-hour mark but Lewis Knight - forming an impressive partnership with skipper Harry Hudson - got across to make a well-timed challenge.

Greenhalgh forced a good save from Carey after picking up Brandon Davey’s lay-off to the edge of the box as Margate went close to the opening goal midway through the half.

Veteran striker Chris Dickson twice fired wide in quick succession for the visitors while Hudson and Harvey Brand made blocks from Ogunwamide and James Hammond before Margate took the lead in the 39th minute.

Greenhalgh, having been fouled just outside the area, swung over a free-kick to the neat post and Olutade lost his man to finish from close range.

It was the first goal Horsham had conceded in the FA Cup this season.

The Hornets, conquerors of National South Dorking in the second qualifying round, set about finding an equaliser after the break.

They had plenty of possession in the Gate half and went close when Ajakaiye hit the outside of the post after getting away from his man.

Sparks then flashed an effort inches wide from the edge of the box, with the referee surprisingly awarding a corner.

It took a goalline clearance from Jack Brivio to deny Margate a second goal on 68 minutes after Brand rose to meet Greenhalgh’s free-kick from the left.

Having survived that, Horsham levelled two minutes later with Ogunwamide on target after a driving run into the box.

Brave defending from Hudson, putting his head in where it hurts, prevented Dickson getting a shot on goal as Horsham looked for a winning goal.

There was no settling for a replay from either side but a clear opening eluded Margate in the closing stages despite getting into the final third several times and having a penalty appeal waved away.

Hammond bent a free-kick wide for Horsham a minute from the end of normal time, then ex-Ramsgate winger Joe Turner, just on as a substitute, had an effort blocked in the box.

The replay takes place at Horsham on Tuesday night.
