Margate fell to their second Ryman League Premier Division defeat of the season as third-placed Hendon won 3-2 thanks to a Leon Smith hat-trick.
Charlie Allen gave Gate the lead on 12 minutes and that was how stayed until three goals in the final six minutes of the half.
Smith levelled the scores on 39 minutes and then put the home side in front right on half-time.
However, Margate had the final say of the half when Allen put them level in injury time.
Smith then completed his hat-trick just after the hour to earn the win and move them to within three points of the Gate.
The result means Gate have slipped five points behind leaders Maidstone who thrashed play-off chasing Leiston 4-1 at The Gallagher Stadium.
