League leaders Margate suffered their first home defeat of the season on Saturday.
Terry Brown's side went down 2-1 to Peacehaven & Telscombe at Hartsdown Park, allowing second-placed Maidstone United to close the gap with a 1-1 draw at home to Hendon.
Had the Stones not conceded a last-gasp equaliser in that game, they would have gone top for Christmas.
Ryan Moss put Margate in front on Saturday, latching onto a ball over the top of the Peacehaven defence and rounding goalkeeper Antony Di Bernardo.
But it was 1-1 on the half-hour when Tom Burton got up well to equalise with a header.
Di Bernardo pulled off two great saves to deny Moss a second goal before Kane Wills and Lewis Taylor both went close for the home side.
But it was Peacehaven who grabbed the winning goal, substitute Wilfred Grimaud outstripping the home defence and lofting the ball over Nikki Bull in the Margate goal.
