Margate boss Steve Watt believes finishing bottom of the table summed up their season.
Watt always faced an uphill battle after taking charge of Margate with only a third of the campaign left.
But having lifted them off the foot of Vanarama National League South, they returned there on the final day when Bishop’s Stortford thrashed Truro.
“It sums up the whole year,” said Watt. “It was a goal of mine not to finish bottom but when you looked at our run-in it was always going to be tough.
“We got the points we could to get off bottom but to stay off there was going to be tough. It sums up Margate’s season, you could argue that the run they’ve been on earlier in the season is probably why they are where they are now.
“But the club has been through some harsh times before I came here. That’s not any individuals though, it was the hand Margate were dealt this season and we’ve got to put a line under it, look forward to a good future and building a successful club.”
Watt praised the supporters who have stood by Margate throughout the season, and hopes he can deliver success on the field in the Ryman League next year.
“It’s good to draw a line under it,” he added. “That’s not just for me personally, I would say for players, the club itself.
“We can move onto next season and look forward to a successful season and one that will hopefully be much different to the one the fans have experienced this season.
“I think that’s important as the fans have been fantastic since I’ve been here. Hopefully we can give them something back and we can build a team that can compete next season.”
