Manager Steve Watt says conceding late goals is a habit Margate need to break if they are to stay ahead of their rivals in the Bostik Premier play-off race.
The Blues were pegged back by Dernell Wynter’s last-gasp equaliser for Enfield at Hartsdown Park on Saturday, just a week after a similarly late strike had denied them victory away to Met Police.
Watt admitted not being able to see out games had been a problem for his side earlier in the season, but he thought they’d got better, only for the issue to re-surface recently during a five-game winless run.
The Gate boss, who estimates late goals have cost his side as many as 15 points, said: “The players are all disappointed, there’s not a person in the dressing room who isn’t disappointed at what’s happened. It’s frustrating, it’s annoying but the amount it’s happened this season is the real issue.
“It’s not a coincidence, it’s an issue and it’s something we thought we’d got over, because it was earlier in the season it was happening but the problem’s reared its head again and I need to maybe have a look at individuals, and maybe make a few decisions because I can’t accept games going that way
“When we’re in front, when we’re in control and then at the flick of a switch it ends up the way it panned out against Enfield.
“It’s a mentality thing I believe not an ability thing, I’ve got a very good squad, we’ve proven that but I think it’s a mentality thing when we’re in those sort of situations.”
Dave Martin’s neat 12th minute side-foot had put the Blues ahead against Enfield and that looked like earning the points until Wynter bundled home from a corner in the last-minute of normal time.
Margate remain fourth but their lead over Hendon and Leiston – the sides immediately outside the play-off places – is down to two points with seven games remaining.
Margate host Worthing on Saturday and welcome back top scorer Jordan Chiedozie after suspension but full-back Chris Sessegnon’s long-standing knee injury now requires surgery, ruling him out for the rest of the season.
Ben Swift continues to be hampered by a hamstring injury while Watt has brought winger Orlando Smith back to the club for the vital run-in.
The Blues travel to play-off rivals Folkestone on Monday in a a game being billed as the biggest meeting between the sides for two decades.
