Aaron Barnes believes title-chasing Ramsgate have the versatility in their play to score all different types of goals.
Rams love to build from the back and scored one of the goals of the season in their last home game when Joe Taylor finished a 23-pass move that involved every player.
That came in a 3-1 win over Erith Town and Ramsgate, whose match at Littlehampton last weekend was postponed, are back at Southwood this Saturday (3pm) for the visit of Lancing.
The Isthmian South East leaders have scored plenty of team goals but have other strings to their bow.
“We’ve scored a lot of very good goals from back to front, with multiple passing sequences,” said defender Barnes. “But we’ve been able to mix it up as well.
“There was a game, Ashford at home, where me and Jay Leader both scored from corners.
“We’ve got the ability to mix it up and score in different ways.
“We’ve added Billy Munday, who’s very good aerially, and TJ Jadama’s very good aerially so we’ve got different ways of being able to score.
“I feel we’re a well-rounded team, we’re not just a team that plays one way.
“We want to play out from the back but we’ve got different avenues of getting goals, so it’s not just JT getting 60 goals this season, which he will do, but it’s good to have other players who will chip in as well.”
Barnes joined Ramsgate primarily as a right-back but has found a home in central defence.
The former Welling and Hythe man is flourishing in the role.
“I’d say 80% of the games I’ve been playing centre-back, and a couple of games at right-back,” said Barnes.
“I’m a versatile player, I’ve played pretty much every position in my career apart from in goal.
“The way we play, it lends itself to being on the ball a lot, you’re asked to start attacks and you’re effectively an extra midfielder at times.
“But I’ve really enjoyed the other side of the game as well, the actual defending, winning headers and stuff like that.
“I’ve had that experience, I’ve done it many times before, it’s been really good, especially playing in a team like we do.
“It’s fun playing with a lot of good players, playing really good football. We’re in a good place.”
Ramsgate lost their unbeaten record in bizarre circumstances at East Grinstead on Tuesday last week, going down 2-1.
Taylor had just pulled a goal back from the penalty spot when the referee had to go off injured.
With a linesman taking over in the middle, confusion reigned as to who would run the line instead.
Rams keeper Tom Hadler and boss Ben Smith ended up being sent off and there were more than 20 minutes of added time.
The 10 men were camped in East Grinstead’s half but couldn’t find an equaliser.
“The defeat came in controversial fashion but to go unbeaten is something that barely ever happens,” said Barnes.
“That’s not the most important thing.
“You want to win every game but at the end of the day, our focus is just on getting promoted.
“We had a slip-up against East Grinstead but the sign of a good team is how you bounce back.
“With the game being called off on Saturday, that was disappointing because you want to get back on the horse and get back to winning ways.
“So, we’ve got to wait a little bit, but we’re still in good spirits, we’ve had a really good start.
“We’ve just got to keep going and not get ahead of ourselves.
“We can’t look at the table because the table doesn’t mean anything until well into the new year.
“It’s all about focusing on ourselves and the rest will look after itself.”
Barnes, along with Josh Ajayi and goalkeeper Henry Newcombe, played for Ramsgate Athletic in their 3-2 Kent County League win over Guru Nanak at the weekend.
With the first team not in action, it was a good opportunity to get minutes in the tank.
Barnes said: “The last couple of weeks I’ve been on the bench, and I’ve been nursing a little hamstring injury as well.
“We’ve got a lot of games coming up and players are going to be needed, so it was just a case of making sure I’m ready for that.
“There was no point in me having a free weekend and the same with the other boys who played.
“You don’t want to be going into a game this Saturday, against Lancing, not having played for a couple of weeks, so it was good getting minutes under my belt.”
