Margate’s winless run in Ryman League Premier Division extended to four games after they were held to a stalemate by Wingate & Finchley on Saturday.
In truth it might have been worse for the hosts with keeper Nikki Bull needed to produce fine stops to prevent Rob Laney and Harrison Georgiou from snatching the points for the visitors.
Gate had chances to win it too with Lewis Taylor seeing a shot deflected wide after good work by Luke Moore before the break and Tom Phipp rattling the post with a 20-yard drive after the turnaround.
Ryan Moss missed the target when well-placed in the closing stages and substitute Zac Attwood headed over the bar and saw another chance saved, while the final chance fell to Moss in stoppage-time, with his point blank header superbly tipped over the bar by Bobby Smith.
Maidstone saw their lead at the top of the table cut on a cagey day of action on which none of the top 13 clubs lost, with Gate’s tie just one of seven draws in the division.
Second-placed Hendon were one of just five teams to win in the division, pulling within seven points of the Stones, who have played a game more.
Margate are still third, now six points behind Hendon but with two games in hand, and nine points clear of the play-off chasing pack.
