A care home resident has managed to share birthday celebrations with family despite the ongoing coronavirus lockdown.

Jack Angus turned 90 last week and, although he could not have visitors to join him at Barnes Lodge Care Home in Tonbridge, there was still a chance to receive many happy returns from loved ones.

The nonagenarian's daughter and son-in-law came to the Tudeley Lane home's car park to congratulate Mr Angus at the window.

His cards and gifts were then left by the main doors and the birthday boy was able to unwrap his presents and open his cards indoors, while talking to the well-wishers below from a safe distance.

Care home staff had also made a birthday cake to mark the special occasion. "It was a lovely surprise and it was very emotional to see them," Mr Angus said of the visit from his family.

Daughter Sue Whiteing said: "It was wonderful to see Dad on his 90th birthday, given the current lockdown situation, even though it was through the windows. The Barnes Lodge team are fantastic and look after him extremely well. We know he is in safe hands."

Nicky Pett, general manager of the care home, said: "Our residents' birthdays are a little bit different at the moment but it’s not getting anyone down and we're celebrating as normal.

"We've been finding new ways to communicate and working really hard to keep everything positive and it’s working really well. The team here have pulled together exceptionally well over the last few weeks and I’m really proud of them."
