German supermarket chain, Aldi, could replace Homebase in Tonbridge.

The DIY store, based in Cannon Lane, shut its doors last month and neighbouring businesses, Carpet Right and Ponden Home are thought to be following suit.

The current freehold owner of the site, M&G Real Estate, has submitted an application to Tonbridge and Malling Borough council.

It hopes to enable the sale of food from one unit and sports good from the remaining.

If plans did not go ahead, the 4,000 square foot site would remain vacant.

Speculation is rife among the town, with some claiming Aldi and a Sports Direct store could move into the plot.

A number of supermarket-chains are already present in Tonbridge, including Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Lidl and Iceland.

An Aldi spokesman said the chain is considering a number of locations across the South East including Tonbridge.

They added: “We are actively seeking a site in the hoping of bringing an Aldi store to the area and creating jobs for the surrounding communities.”

Development of the site would also include the construction of 42 additional car parking spaces and alterations to the security bollards.

Major redevelopment is also set to get underway in Tonbridge High Street this month.
