Businesses are reopening today after a widespread power cut hit a town centre following a gas leak.

Part of the High Street in Tonbridge was cordoned off yesterday as police restricted access to the area for vehicles and pedestrians.

Although the road was subsequently reopened, properties in the area remained without power until almost 11pm.

One of the affected businesses was Fuggles Beer Cafe, which lost a day’s trading as a result of the incident.

Owner Alex Greig said: “It was most of central Tonbridge.

“It was not ideal, but there’s not a lot you can do really. Everything is back to normal today, and we’re just cracking on.”

UK Power Networks says power was eventually restored at 10.43pm.

A fire service spokesman said: “Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to reports of a pipe exploding on Tonbridge High Street which led to a fire on the pavement.

“On arrival, crews cordoned off the high street to make the scene safe and extinguished the fire using a hose reel jet.

“The High Street remained closed between Brodyke and East Street, and duty of care was passed over to SNG and UK Power Networks.”
