A woman's engagement ring has been stolen as she travelled home from visiting her parents.

Kate Marfleet was coming through Tonbridge train station yesterday after visiting her parents home in Ashford when she heard something drop on the floor.

Her first thought was that some change had come out of her pocket as she reached to get her ticket, but less than five minutes later she realised it was something much more valuable.

The 27-year-old from Chichester Road said: "I was coming home from Ashford and as I pulled my hand out of my pocket to get my ticket I heard something drop and I thought it was some change.

"About three minutes later I looked down and realised my ring was gone."

Miss Marfleet from Tonbridge ran back to the top of the stairs on platform two, near the ticket barriers, where it had fallen off of her finger but it was nowhere to be seen.

She added: "I stayed searching for about 20 minutes but I couldn't find it. So someone must have picked it up."

The white gold ring contains a round set, solitaire diamond and is a size K.

Miss Marfleet and her fiance, Tim, are due to get married at the end of August.

She said: "It is very sentimental to me and I don't really want to get married without it."

British Transport Police are investigating and inquiries are ongoing.

A spokesman said: "Officers from British Transport Police are currently investigating an engagement ring theft.
