Stephen Richardson, 74, a parish councillor, who lives on Carpenters Lane, said: "It's a complete shock, normally it's a quiet area, I'm very disturbed about it. As far as I'm aware, nothing like this has ever happened in Hadlow."

Allan Maile, 39, who also lives in the road, said: "When I woke up I saw the air ambulance, and it was quite surprising as it's usually quiet around here.

"It's a shock, most people have children here, in close proximity too so it's definitely worrying. I've lived here 30 years and nothing like this has ever happened round here."

Nick Collins, 67, chairman of Hadlow Parish Council, commented: "It's clearly distressing and disturbing. No one expects that kind of thing to occur. Everyone's thoughts must be with those who have lost their loved ones and who are now picking up the pieces."

Police officers remain at the scene.
