A new bakery and coffee shop could be built on the site of a former menswear store in Tonbridge.

Moss Bros, which specialises in men's suits, quit the High Street in September and the shop's site is now unused.

An application has been submitted to Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council seeking approval for a coffee shop to be installed in the listed Tudor building.

If approved, a counter would be installed at the front of the venue and the original timber structure would not be altered in any way.

The only structural alteration would be the installation of a disabled toilet on the ground floor.

The applicant, Clare Barton Ltd, said the overall intention is to retain the character of the building by intsalling fittings and structures sympathetic to the surroundings.

Neighbours have written to the council supporting the development. Miss Killick said: "In 1941 this building was Applins restaurant and bakery - our mother came to Tonbridge to manage it.

"We are delighted that some buildings are returning to an earlier use."

The application would required a change of the building's use from A1 - shops to A3 - restaurants and cafes.
