Police cordon in Tonbridge by River Medway after 'person seen in water'

Police, paramedics and firefighters have cordoned off part of a river this afternoon.

An air ambulance has landed near Tonbridge Town Lock, after a person was spotted in the River Medway. Kent Police have now confirmed a woman in her 60s has died.

Police have cordoned off part of the river next to Vale Road, Tonbridge (16956584)

Cars in Vale Road, Tonbridge, are negotiating their way around emergency vehicles next to the river.

By 2pm much of the police presence has moved on, however police have erected a tent next to the riverbank and there are still officers at the scene.

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 11am regarding concern for a person seen in the river at a location near Vale Road, Tonbridge.

"Officers and the South East Coast Ambulance Service are currently at the scene."

An air ambulance spokeswoman confirmed its helicopter was sent to Tonbridge, but was unable to provide further details.

The fire service has confirmed it is assisting police at the scene near Alsford Timber.
