Police officers have smashed the window of a car to rescue two dogs locked in the sweltering heat.

Kent Police received reports of two animals locked in a car in Castle Street, Tonbridge just before 12.15pm.

Officers desperately tried to track down the vehicle's owner but became increasingly concerned for the welfare of the animals and smashed a window to gain access.

The dogs were removed around 1.20pm and taken to a police kennel where they were cared for until their owner was identified.

The force said details of the incident will be passed to the RSPCA.
