Up to 600 stores will open their doors for the first time in more than two months across Tonbridge and Malling.

Tonbridge High Street and villages centres such as Borough Green and West Malling are expected to see the highest increase in footfall, with the borough council introducing an action plan, aiming to support the safe-reopening of businesses.

From Monday, outlets allowed to trade will include clothes, books, shoes and toy stores, electronic retailers, auction houses and photography studios.

In the borough, high street support officers will be on hand to provide information to shoppers and street furniture and public facilities will be cleaned more often.

CCTV will also monitor queues and spot any overcrowding while there will also be street signs and posters reminding people to keep social distancing.

Leader of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, Nicolas Heslop, said: “While things will be different and social distancing the new norm, shopping locally and safely is the best way we can support local businesses and breathe life back into our local economy.

“If everyone works collaboratively and acts responsibly I’m confident we can continue to make progress and navigate the road to recovery. By working together and observing the rules, we can make our towns and villages safe and welcoming spaces once again."
