Tonbridge town centre faces a summer of disruption as improvement works get underway.

Pavements and roads around Tonbridge Station are set to be upgraded after work began on Wednesday.

Throughout the summer, overnight closures will be in place as Quarry Hill Road will be resurfaced using the same materials as the high street.

During the day, temporary traffic lights may be put in place from 7am to 7pm.

Bus passengers will have to use a temporary bus stop for the Quarry Hill Road bus route, which will be otherwise unaffected.

KCC cabinet member for highways Mike Whiting said: "Tonbridge is the busiest train station in Kent and we need to improve access so that residents can continue to access the station safely.

"I appreciate these works will be disruptive to residents and visitors to the town and I can only apologise for this, but I hope the improvements will lead to more people using environmentally friendly types of travel."

It will see the station entrance's footpath widened and new signalled crossings on Waterloo Road and Quarry Hill Road.

The bus stop outside Lidl on Quarry Hill Road will be extended to fit three buses without blocking traffic and new protective bollards will be installed around the station entrance.

Works will start outside of Lidl and once complete will move back towards the station entrance itself.

The most disruptive works are expected to end before the close of the summer holidays, with final works finishing in the autumn.
