A town in Kent was named the sunniest place in the UK thanks to the scorching hot weather this weekend.

East Malling was officially the place with the most sunshine in the country yesterday according to the Met Office.

The county saw people flock to the coast to soak up the rays.

Despite East Malling being exposed to 15.6 hours of sunlight, it was not the hottest place.

People would have been forgiven for wilting in Northolt, in London's borough of Ealing, as they experienced the hottest temperature of the day at 34C - hotter than Ibiza.

A number of warnings were issued from paramedics, firefighters and RNLI lifeguards.

Even animal charities told people to keep a watchful eye on their pets.

There were also long queues for the best spot around the pool with hundreds, including a pregnant woman, waiting for at least an hour to have a dip.

And the coldest place recorded was Lerwick which still pulled in a decent reading of 15.9C on the mercury.

Many will be glad for a cooler day coming up though after a sticky night.

Temperatures are not expected to go above a high of 26C, as the sun lingers for a bit keeping things dry.

Tonight, plenty of warm evening sunshine, then a mostly dry night with long clear spells. Clouds could come over late in the evening and temperatures could dip to as low as 12C.

Monday could see things returning to normal with sunny spells to start but generally cooler and cloudier for much of the day. Cloud clearing later on for some evening sun. Highs of 23C.
