Kitchen fire in Waterloo Place in Tonbridge

Firefighters were called to burning laundry in the kitchen of a house today.

A laundry basket had been left on an electric hob and burst into flames.

The blaze happened in Waterloo Place, Tonbridge, at lunchtime.

A spokesman for Kent Fire and Rescue Service said: "Two fire engines were in attendance. Crews arrived to find heavy smoke coming through the kitchen window.

"Firefighters with breathing apparatus used a hose-reel jet to extinguish the flames. It is believed to have been started accidentally when a laundry basket was left on an electric hob."

There were no reported injuries. All occupants of the house were outside when the fire crews arrived.

The fire service has since issued a warning about the dangers of kitchen fires.

The spokesman said: "The public should be be extra careful in the kitchen.

"Remember to keep ovens, hobs and grills clean and clear of any items at all times to reduce the risk of a kitchen fire."

The emergency call was received at 12.51pm. Firefighters had it under control within 25 minutes.
