A mum has been airlifted to hospital after being hit by a car outside a school this morning.

The pedestrian, thought to be a mum doing the school run, has been taken to Kings College Hospital after being struck by a vehicle just outside Woodlands Primary School in Tonbridge

She is being treated for serious chest and abdomen injuries after being pinned under the car.

Fire crews used air bags and hydraulic rescue equipment to lift up the car to release the casualty.

Police, two paramedic cars and an ambulance also attended the scene in Lawrence Road at around 9am.

An air ambulance landed at the school to take the as yet un-named woman to the London-based hospital.

One mum, who lives nearby and has children at the school, said something like this was bound to happen due to drivers not taking care when doing the school run.

She said: "We have been saying something like this would happen for years. There is chaos along this road at every school run.

"The council have been warned so many times.

"It could have been anyone, I have seven children and it could have quite easily been one of them.

"The issue is people drive up here, get to the dead end and there is no room to turn around so they have to reverse back down the road.

"There are keep clear and no parking signs but people still do it and now this has happened."

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police was called at 8.50am regarding a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in Lawrence Road, Tonbridge.

"Officers, Kent Fire and Rescue Service, the South East Coast Ambulance Service attended the scene where the pedestrian was treated for serious injuries.

"She has been taken to a London hospital by air ambulance for further medical attention."

Woodlands School said staff rushed outside to help deal with the incident.

Deputy head teacher Mark Burns said: “This morning the parent of one of our pupils was injured when they were hit by a car near the school.

"No children were involved in the collision. Staff will be offering support to the family and to any children who witnessed the collision.

"Our thoughts are with the parent and her family and friends at this difficult time.”
