A world record holder and inspirational explorer has urged a Tonbridge guide group to lead a life of adventure and challenge stereotypes.

Sally Kettle, who is the only woman to have rowed the Atlantic twice, visited 12 Tonbridge Guides to share her experiences and enjoy some adventure-themed games.

Alongside her aquatic adventures, Sally has also trekked the Pyrenees, worked as a humanitarian aid worker, produced a wildlife documentaryin the South Atlantic and raised over £500,000 for charity.

A Tonbridge guide, 10-year-old Abi, said: "Sally is a strong and determined lady who is a great role model for guides. I found her talk very interesting, especially how she lived on the boat for months in a little space, with funny food and no proper toilet. Yuck.”

A former guide herself, Sally credits the charity with giving her the confidence and determination to succeed in the challenges she’s faced. She said: “As a brownie, guide and young leader, I came away with the knowledge that women can do anything.

"Girlguiding is so important for young women because it gives them the opportunity to learn outside the confines of school, and experience new and exciting things in a safe, girl-only space.”

The world record holder is now an ambassador for Girlguiding and wants to inspire the next generation of members to lead a life less ordinary.

She added: "The charity gives girls a voice so they can change their futures for the better, and I’m extremely proud to be part of it.”
