More than 500 people have enjoyed a musical treat as part of a series of free summer concerts.

The Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers were the first to perform a concert on the Bailey Lawn at Tonbridge Castle and played a mix of traditional army marches, a selection of hits by the Beatles, some war time favourites and some well-known songs from Bruno Mars.

Mayor of Tonbridge and Malling, Cllr Sasha Luck also attended the free summer event on Sunday, August 3 in the glorious sunshine.

She said: “This was the perfect start to our free summer concert series at the Castle. The Band of the Corps of Royal Engineers were absolutely fantastic; what a wonderful way to spend an afternoon."

There will be three more free concerts on each of the remaining Sundays in August.

Each one will take place between 3pm and 5pm and will be performed by a mixture of amateur and professional bands.

There is no need to book a ticket for the events, organised by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, people can just turn up on the day and enjoy the music.

"This gave the band a chance to show how versatile it is. Playing traditional marches to selections, then from Big Band to pop music was a great way to showcase what music we can offer.

"The band had a great time performing and we hope the audience enjoyed it too. Personally this was great performing to friends and family that don’t get to see us perform that often.”

Sunday, August 24 - Bacchus Wind Orchestra

Sunday, August 31 - Maidstone Wind Symphony

The Hildenborough Women’s Institute will be selling light refreshments throughout each afternoon.
