A scheme designed to bring parts of Kent's heritage to life by highlighting places where important people from history once lived or worked, has unveiled a new plaque.
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council revealed the display in a special ceremony held to commemorate a local poet and cook who produced a well known cook book aimed at the domestic reader.
The blue plaque, made by Aylesford Pottery, was unveilled to remember this important person in the borough's history.
The presentation, on Wednesday, July, 16 was held at The Priory, Bordyke in Tonbridge displayed one of six new plaques that can be seen around the borough marking notable citizens who lived there.
Elizabeth (‘Eliza’) Acton (1799 - 1859), was born at Battle and later lived at The Priory.
Her 'Modern Cookery for Private Families', published in 1845 and continuously in print until 1914, introduced the now universal practice of listing the ingredients and cooking times with each recipe.
Delia Smith has called Acton ‘the best writer of recipes in the English language’ and many of her recipes are still in use.
The Borough Council is leading the Blue Plaque scheme in Tonbridge with the help of Tonbridge Civic Society, Tonbridge Historical Society, Men of Kent and Kentish Men and the Town Wardens.
Cabinet member for leisure youth and arts, Cllr Maria Heslop said: "Tonbridge has a long and rich history and many well-known people have lived here.
"It is right that we should celebrate the town's heritage and the Council hopes that this initiative will highlight to residents and visitors these links with our past."
