Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council joins forces with LitterGram to clean up parts of Kent countryside

A local council has vowed to team up with a new form of social media, aiming to reduce the amount of litter on the streets.

The amount of rubbish in the country has especially concerned local businessman Danny Lucas, who has created a downloadable app to help the cause.

Since the introduction of LitterGram, Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council have called a meeting with the creator, who lives in Tonbridge, to discuss cleaning up the borough.

LitterGram hopes to highlight litter in the country, and the Garden of England has been flagged as the worst affected area - being the hottest spot for uploads on the app.

The app's creator, Mr Lucas, of Higham Lane, said: "TMBC has agreed to a number of immediate actions, including cleaning up road signs and repairing broken ones.

"Having the UK's first council working with LiterGram, adopting it's technology and social media approach is revolutionary - it could start a wave off around the country.

"We hope to see Britain tidy up its act quicker than we had ever hoped and make it great again."

A spokesperson for TMBC said: "Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council officers have met with Mr Lucas to discuss his concerns about littering nationally.

"We are now arranging for Mr Lucas to meet with environmental enforcement officers and the Environmental Projects Officer so that he can gain an understanding of the initiatives the Council can undertake.

"The Council sees LitterGram as one of a number of useful tools that residents can use to report such issues, including direct use of our own online forms for a wide range of issues, available at http://www.tmbc.gov.uk/do-it-online."
