A witness has described the terrifying moment a bus went up in flames “like a bomb had gone off”.

The parked bus caught fire on Quarry Hill Road in Tonbridge this afternoon (June 11) at around 5.30pm.

It is believed that nobody was in the vehicle at the time.

The bystander, who was driving home, said: “I literally just saw the bus go up into flames and there was a massive bang that sounded like a bomb had gone off.

“It caught fire and then went bang – there was loads of black smoke.

“It really scared me.”

The fire service confirmed that two fire engines attended the blaze, and it’s thought Quarry Hill Road was blocked while crews extinguished the flames.

“The fire engine got there pretty quickly and it took about 10 minutes to put the fire out,” the witness said.

Kent Fire & Rescue service said they were called to an engine fire, adding: “Two fire engines attended, and crews wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to extinguish the flames.

“No injuries were reported.”

Police have been contacted for a comment.
