Carol singing Santa wanted by police

A CAROL singing "Santa Claus" is suspected of smashing the rear windscreen of a car after being turned away from a house.

A young man dressed in a Santa coat and hat called at a house in Quarry Bank, Tonbridge, on Tuesday evening and began to sing a carol - badly according to Kent Police.

He was turned away after the homeowner asked who he was collecting for and the carol singer admitted that it was for himself and not for charity.

Shortly after the singer had left, it was discovered that homeowner's rear windscreen had been smashed - causing damage estimated at £200.

Police are now keen to speak to the chief suspect who is white, aged 18-20, slim and about 5ft 9ins tall. He was wearing a white beard but also a black tracksuit bottoms and silver trainers.

Sgt Michael Perryman, of West Kent Police, said: "We do not know if the person dressed as Santa is responsible for this damage but I am sure the real Father Christmas would have something to say about someone calling at houses in his name.

"It seems a pity to have to send out crime reduction messages at what should be a peaceful and festive time. If people are not expecting callers they should please think carefully before answering the door."
