KELLY Holmes' open top bus parade cost in excess of £20,000 to stage, it has been revealed.
A report published by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council shows the current estimated cost of the double Olympic gold medallist's homecoming celebration in Tonbridge stands at £21,500, with around £17,000 to come out of council coffers. Additional funding of £5,000 was provided by the London 2012 Olympic Bid.
TMBC chief executive David Hughes said the money could be taken from reserve funds set aside for civic events, and there would be no impact on future levels of council tax.
He said: "The mood of the whole nation in general and of this borough in particular was such that it was clear that a public celebration of Kelly's achievement was both appropriate and expected. By common consent, this was a truly memorable event that gave great pleasure to Kelly and the public alike.
"In an unbelievably short space of time, a fitting tribute to and celebration of Kelly Holmes' magnificent achievements was conceived, planned and executed. Tonbridge had a day quite unique in history."
The council is proposing to make donations of £150 to Tonbridge Lions, and £125 each to the Tonbridge Afternoon and Evening Women's Institutes in recognition of their help on the day.
