Homeowners have been warned to beware of people using the internet to steal bank details after a number of scam emails were reported in Tonbridge and Malling.

Affected residents have received messages to say they are in debt as their last council tax payment could not be processed and are given 24 to change their account information.

The email, which states the person will be fined if they do not comply, includes a link to a fraudulent where people are asked to enter their bank details.

Sharon Shelton, the council's director of finance and transformation, said: “This is the latest in a range of scams aimed at tricking people to part with their bank details and their cash.

"Our officers never email or telephone residents to ask them to confirm their bank details in this way and we are urging residents to be extremely wary of these unscrupulous individuals who may use a variety of tactics to try to get them to part with personal details or money.”

People can avoid falling victim to scammers by checking their authenticity with the tax team on 01732 876388.

Residents should call police on 101 if they believe someone is trying to impersonate a council worker.
